Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said one suspect in the robbery of the Family Dollar store in Colerain is in custody and another is be ing sought. “Investigation led depu ties to develop two suspects - Dy’twan Chamblee and Ray’Quan Langford - in the robbery of Family Dollar,” Sheriff Holley said. On Feb. 7, deputies from the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office contacted Lt. Martin Phelps of the BCSO letting him know Chamblee had been detained. Chamblee was charged with robbery with a danger ous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dan gerous weapon, accessory after the fact of felony armed robbery and larceny. He was placed under a $250,000 se cured bond. Last Thursday, Sheriff Hol ley announced his office was looking for Langford in con nection with the crime. This led to the suspect surrender ing himself at the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office Sat urday. Details of his charges and bond were not available as of press time Tuesday. Har- See CAUGHT, 10 Center will be sought County to continue developing TGOW THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance PDWELLSVILLE - Bertie County is moving for ward with work to build an education center at the site of the Tall Glass of Water project. Last week. Dr. Stan Riggs made a proposal to the board to pursue an education center in partnership with two North Carolina state agencies. Dr. Riggs, who spoke at the Feb. 10 meeting of the Bertie County Board of Commissioners, pro vided a brief history of the project, and laid out a path forward. “As you all know, Ber tie County has 147 acres on the west end of the Albemarle Sound, com monly called the Tall Glass of Water,” Dr. Riggs said. “Bertie County has initiated a plan to de velop that property as a recreational center. “Just south of that piece of property is an other 1,300 acres that is now owned by the State of North Carolina, Divi sion of State Parks” he continued. “It is called the Salmon Creek Natu ral Area.” Dr. Riggs said because it is a natural area, it is mostly preserved land. Dignitaries from The Duke Endowment, the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine and Bertie County Schools gathered Thursday to kick off an initiative that will bring dental care to all el ementary and middle school students in the district. The event, held at Windsor Elementary School, served as the official beginning of the Bertie County School-based Oral Preventive Program. “Today we are writing his tory as we (Bertie County Schoois) ceiebrate a strong partnership with the flagship THADD WHITE / Bertie Ledger-Advance Bertie County Schools Superinten dent Dr. Otis Smallwood said he is pleased to welcome the dental care initiative. School of Dentistry at East Carolina University,” said Dr. Otis Smallwood, Super intendent of Bertie County Schools. “We are thrilled to be here at Windsor Elementary School celebrating the launch of the preventive education and oral care program by this prestigious institution.” Dr. Smallwood said the re gion is consistently plagued by gaps of service including criticai care, access, trans portation and other services. “So we are grateful to bene fit from the generosity of ECU and The Duke Endowment that wili provide comprehen sive services to all of our el ementary and middle grades students and help us close those gaps.” The ECU dental school will See DENTAL, 10 Town buys land THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The town of Windsor will purchase approximately three acres of property on West Camden Street. Thursday morning, the Windsor Board of Commissioners held a public hearing Thurs day morning to discuss the purchase. No one spoke at the hearing. Windsor Mayor Jim Hoggard explained the board was close to pur chasing the same tract of land nearly three years ago. At that time, the town was to purchase the property to allow Bertie County to build a new library and cooperative extension office. When the original sur vey showed some con tamination due to the nearby location of the former dry cleaners, the county opted to move on to another site. The mayor said town officials continued the dialogue because they felt the property should be further tested and could possibly still be used.
